College Writing Preparation for Non-Native Speakers

Course Description: ESL 186 is designed to prepare advanced students of English for college-level writing. This course provides a review of English fundamentals and practice in college-level reading, critical thinking, expository essay writing, and basic research skills. Practice in grammar and sentence structure is also emphasized. This is a five unit course that requires five hours of lecture and ten hours of outside preparation per week. ESL 186 fulfills the prerequisite for English 100 and is CSU transferrable.

ESL 186 Student Learning Outcomes

  • compose a logically developed expository essay of 750-1000 words in length;
  • respond analytically in writing to a variety of texts through summarization and reflection; and
  • incorporate paraphrased and quoted information from outside sources to logically support a thesis based expository essay.

Grading: Students will receive a letter grade for ESL 186; however, they can choose to take the course pass/no pass by completing the appropriate form in the Admissions and Records Office. To pass this course, students must complete the following requirements with an overall average of 70% or higher and also pass at least one in-class essay.

Homework Writing                            20%                                         70-79%   = C

In-class Writing                                   20%                                         60-69%   = D

Research Essay                                   15%                                         0-59%     = F

Final In-class Essay                            15%

70-100% = Pass

0-69%     = No Pass
