ESL024 – Reading and Vocabulary II

Welcome to ESL 024!

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed for intermediate students to expand their vocabulary through oral and written practice and improve their reading comprehension.

  • Active Skills for Reading 2 (3rd Edition) by Neil J. Anderson
  • In the Know: Understanding and Using Idioms by Cindy Leaney.
  • 1 Notebook
  • Pens and Pencils
  • Folder

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  • Apply learned knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, word roots, homophones, and compound nouns to guess vocabulary meaning to build vocabulary.
  • Write sentences in own words identifying the main idea in selected texts in class and homework assignments.
  • Use contextual clues to understand unknown vocabulary.
  • Distinguish main ideas from supporting ideas in selected texts in class discussions, written assignments, 
and exams.
  • Apply reading strategies including skimming, scanning, previewing, predicting, and contextual clues, in 
assigned readings and exercises.
